I’m Sánjo [Pre-Feature Short]
Nján Sánjo (I’m Sánjo) documents the life of a dynamic young man named Sánjo in a transphobic suburban locality. Sánjo’s insights spill over the struggles with his gender identity, lack of inclusive spaces and minimal awareness of trans masculine identities in Kerala. Sánjo, who was gender assigned female at birth also shares his passion for mathematics, hockey etc. and how they were key to his survival and realising his gender identity.
This short documentary attempts to delve into questions of autonomy of a transman, from Kerala, and the scope of inclusion for trans persons in contemporary Indian society.
Director
Jijo Kuriakose, is a research analyst by profession and an artist, writer and photographer by passion. Being the Founder Member of Queerala, an organisation for Malayali LGBTQ Community, Jijo has been an active face for various advocacy and rights based campaigns for LGBT rights in Kerala and India. He is a columnist for various online and printed media and has successfully curated art exhibitions and workshops on Sexual Orientation. Considering his efforts in area on LGBTQ Human Rights, he has been invited by the Dept of State, USA, for IVLP, a prestigious fellowship program on International Human Rights, during Aug 2018. He has also been an assistant director for the gay centric Malayalam film, KaBodyscapes.
