Director
When Aashka was eleven years old, she began writing skits with her friends that they would perform for their parents. As these skits transitioned to short films, Aashka discovered her passion for filmmaking and creative writing. She has written many short stories, one of which was selected to be developed into a novella that she published in 2014. As a freelance filmmaker, Aashka has written, directed and edited over 20 short films of all different genres and lengths, the most notable being a 39-page mockumentary she worked on this last summer.
Throughout her time at UCSB, Aashka has had several film internships and has taken on a variety of roles in several student productions, one of which premiered at UCSB’s Reel Loud Film Festival in 2017. In October, Aashka pitched a script she wrote to a panel of Hollywood professionals who selected the story for development. The film, The (In)Dependent Spouse, was Aashka’s formal directorial debut and was completed in March 2018.
An aspiring television writer, Aashka wants to continue writing stories that represent minority groups in a realistic and empowering way. She hopes that the stories she tells will inspire other filmmakers of color to share their experiences, making the entertainment industry more and more inclusive.
